Mapping and Assets

This page explains some of the ways maps and assets can be used and configured.

Maps form a key part of the common operating picture during an event.

Users interact with the maps without the need to learn to use complex Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software.

The system has an extremely robust base for mapping that supports various mapping standards and interoperability with GIS software.

A GIS can still be used in conjunction with the system for more detailed information if such technical resources are available.

There are two components of mapping:

• Maps - used to navigate, view and filter geospatial data

• Assets - used for storing, maintaining and resolving addresses and locality information

Maps provide key information relevant to the event. Maps are also used to capture optional geographical information when register items are added or edited.

The mapping system supports overlays with:

• Markers (points)

• Lines (linetrings)

• Areas and regions (polygon and radius)

Mapping Functions for Users

There are several ways for users to navigate and interact using maps to access items and assets:

• Map View - for Registers, includes navigating the map on the web or mobile app, filtering items and opening them from the map, and selecting overlays and base layers

• Location selection - for Register items, when users edit items they can use the map to retrieve nearby assets and record geographical information including:

  • Text based searching

  • Map based searching (including near me searches using device GPS and the mobile app)

  • Marking the current location (using device GPS and the mobile app)

  • Annotating the map (and drawing)

Library Geospatial Feature

Users can create geospatial features for one or more events using the Library module Geospatial Feature items.

With this feature it is also possible to configure areas to search within.

Map Layers

Administrators can manage map layers using the Map Layers register including:

• Base Layers — provide the base tile data such as roads, topographical data and satellite imagery from a wide range of sources

• Feature Layer — provides data based on other data within the system or data from external systems

Real-time feeds are also supported (for example, a fire front updated as it moves).

Depending on your region and configuration, your system may have some default layers set up for you. It also supports a wide range of formats and options for importing base layers and register layers including Geospatial features through the Library module.

To supply your own asset data for asset lookups please lodge a support request and speak with our service desk. The system can support a flexible range of geospatial asset types including Shapefile, TAB file and open formats, and the system can transform between projections. The process involves an initial assessment of the data along with the creation of an import parser rule, and following that, the data can be automatically imported at regular intervals.
